TUNEIn to ReadingTUNEIn to Reading is a literacy intervention software program that utilizes the power or music to address the five core areas of reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension. The intent of this program is to increase young people’s reading levels so that they can begin to read on grade. Each member completes a pre-Cloze test online to determine their appropriate instructional reading level and obtain base-line data in order to determine the individual reading gains. This test is correlated to the Qualitative Reading Inventory, the only one accepted by both the Florida Center for Reading Research and the United States Department of Education’s Institute of Education Sciences.
Once a level is determined, participants use a micro-phone headset linked to a computer, read on-screen lyrics three times, and then sing a series of songs which are assessed instantly on-screen. The program uses an advanced speech recognition technology that tests for fluency and offers corrective feedback down to the specific letter and phoneme being mispronounced. A score is calculated based on their performance and they are able to see their voice on-screen as a white pitch-tracking line, which they try to keep within blue "in-pitch" boxes.
Immersion Presents When kids get out of school, the last thing most of them want to do is more school-work. That’s why the Immersion Presents programs have been designed to be fun, first and foremost. But there’s also a whole lot of science going on! Immersion Presents and local Boys & Girls Clubs develop and carry out exciting multi-media programs to engage young people in after-school adventures, giving them a better understanding of research, exploration and the natural environment.
In 2002, Dr. Robert Ballard and Dr. Stephen Coan founded Immersion Presents—a non-profit science education organization that brings ocean adventures and discoveries from Mystic Aquarium & Institute for Exploration, the University of Rhode Island and the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration to kids in classrooms, after-school settings and informal learning arenas.
In our constantly changing world, Immersion Presents helps students understand the positive roles that science and technology play in their everyday lives. Immersion exposes students to ongoing scientific expeditions in an effort to ignite their interest in real discovery and learning.
[Dr. Robert D. Ballard – oceanographer most noted for his work in underwater archaeology. Long associated with the National Geographic Society, he is most famous for the discoveries of the wrecks of the RMS Titanic in 1985, the battleship Bismark in 1989 and the wreck of the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown in 1998.]
